Whether a patient's concerns are something they were born with or the result of an illness or accident, we can create a natural, aesthetic ear that will last for years to come. Patients can take advantage of either MEDPOR™ or a Rib Cartilage framework made of their own tissue to lay the foundations for their ear. Incisions are placed discreetly so that scars heal subtly and naturally. If possible, the ear canal can be reconstructed (CANALPLASTY), or a bone anchored hearing aid (BAHA, Ponto Pro, or BONEBRIDGE) can be implanted at the same time as the external ear. If you are concerned about financing treatment, our experienced staff can assist patients and parents with medical insurance pre-certification and payment.
Microtia is a birth deformity of the external ear. Microtia literally means "Small Ear". It occurs in approximately 1 out of every 6,000 births and is bilateral (both sides) 10% of the time. It is more common in children from Asia, South America, Central America, and Pacific ring islands. More severe forms of microtia are associated with absence of the ear canal (aural atresia) and associated conductive hearing loss. The cause of microtia is unknown and is not believed to be caused by anything the parents did or did not do. It is usually not inherited unless it is associated with other associated conditions like Treacher Collin’s syndrome.

Our most common patient is a victim of a motor vehicle, motorcycle, or ATV accident, but we also frequently see burns and bites. If you are only missing part of your ear, then your solution may be straightforward. If the accident was more severe and also damaged the surrounding tissues, then your solution might be more complicated. We will have to establish whether the vascular supply to the scalp fascia is intact. A Doppler ultrasound of the superficial temporal artery and the occipital artery can usually be performed at your local hospital. Please contact our office and we will help you obtain the necessary studies.
